Why You Need Regular Inspection and Maintenance of Trailer Bearings

Seized trailer bearings can not only severely damage your axle, but a worn out or poorly lubricated trailer bearings create material stresses and frictional heat that will lead either to the wheel seizing just as hard as if the brakes had jammed on, or will cause metal fatigue that could lead to the sudden loss of the whole wheel.

A lost or seized wheel is an extreme emergency for both other motorists and yourself. If an axle digs into the asphalt it could vault the trailer, flip the load, jack knife the rig, or cause the trailer to rip away at the hitch mount.

Neglected trailer bearings can result in a smaller problem too. Old bearing grease loses viscosity and leaks onto the brake pads if not regularly changed. Contamination of the trailer’s brakes will increase your maintenance costs.

We Perform OEM Level Maintenance

At Ainsworth Trailer Repair, you will get quick and thorough service, done to the manufacturers’ standards. For trailer bearings we will:

Remove the wheel and hub—We never “eyeball” trailer bearings and call it “good.”

Completely disassemble the hub—We cannot inspect bearing races and spindles without getting to them.

Inspect the bearing races and spindle—To check for wear, the current parts have to be degreased.

Replace parts if required—We don’t take chances with your safety. If something needs replacing, we’ll show you why if you want to see for yourself.

Reassemble the hub and repack the trailer bearings—Everything will be reassembled correctly with the right parts and re-packed with fresh bearing grease.

Re-install dust cap/bearing protectors—We will ensure that these are properly reinstalled to get the maximum service interval from the work we have performed.
