Semi-Trailer Repair—Winter Is Coming Whether Your Suspension is Ready or Not

Articles / October 3, 2016

At Ainsworth, we got our start in doing mobile semi-trailer repair. Over the years, one of the things we have seen is that fleet managers, drivers, and owner/operators tend to believe everything on their trailers is fine—until they aren’t. With winter coming soon, now is the time to get scheduled for either fleet maintenance, or to have individual trailers inspected from top to bottom. Here, we will discuss the bottom.

Your Winter Semi-Trailer Repair Requirements

Are Your Tires In Shape?

Uneven wear on your semi-trailer’s tires can be a sign of wheel bearing or axle issues. It’s no secret that most winters in Colorado are hard ones, filled with all manner of bad weather. The cold attacks weak spots in the pavement creating pot holes, ruts, and frost heaving. It is not the time of year to be rolling with shot wheel bearings or tweaked axles. In winter having all of your wheels working optimally is critical to your safety. If you have noticed issues beginning to develop in one or more wheels, stop by our centrally located 20,000 square foot shop and we’ll take care of you. If your trailer can’t make it to use, we still perform mobile trailer repair services just like when we started out.

Is Your Suspension Ready?

Semi-trailer Repair JobHigh winter cross winds test the stability of trailers even when the roads are clear. What the winters of Colorado also present is a stern test of the current condition of your semi-trailer’s suspension system.  If the leaf springs in your semi-trailer are of an age you can no longer determine, you may have a suspension on the road to trouble. If your trailer is sagging under its rated loads, or if it leans to one side under an evenly distributed load, or it bounces a lot under braking when empty, or bottoms out under load, it is time to look at replacing your leaf springs. The cold makes steel more brittle, and if your leafs are at the breaking point, winter will expose brittle areas, and micro-fractures sooner than later.
